Winter ’24 Newsletter

As we progress through the construction of House #45, our team is excited to share the latest developments. Here’s an overview of our recent accomplishments and upcoming milestones:

Recent Progress

Plumbing and Electrical Systems: On March 14, 2024, the electric and plumbing passed the “Rough in” inspection. This critical phase ensures that the foundational electrical and plumbing systems are ready to be correctly installed and safe.

Roof Weatherproofing: The roof has been thoroughly weatherproofed, providing the structure with essential protection against the elements.

Inspection and Insulation: The HVAC system is scheduled for inspection in the middle of the week starting March 18. Following a successful inspection, we will proceed with sealing the interior, and then move on to insulation and sheet rock installation.

Upcoming Activities

Front Porch Construction: Mike and Cori from Diamond Excavation conducted a ground inspection on March 16 and prepared auger holes for the sauna tube footing, essential for the front porch’s foundation. The concrete for the front porch is set to be poured in the week starting March 18. Framing for the porch will commence two days post-pouring, aiming for a start date of March 25. This phase is expected to take one week, followed by an inspection.

Roof and Siding: Once the porch awning is completed, we will begin shingling the roof. The siding installation will follow as soon as possible, further advancing the house towards completion.

Volunteer Support

We are grateful for the support of three volunteer groups from Malmstrom, ready to lend their hands in bringing House #45 to life. The 819th Red Horse Squadron, Special Security Forces, and Civil Engineering Squadron will be collaborating with us, each bringing unique skills and enthusiasm to the project.

We are thankful for the hard work from Mike, the Tuesday Crew, Paul, Brandon, volunteers, and community partners. Together, we are not just building a house; we are creating a home for Taylor and her family.

Martin and Eric represented our team at the Habitat for Humanity 2024 Affiliate Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. This year’s theme is, “We Build. We Influence. Together.” Eric attended DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) workshops, discovering innovative strategies from California affiliates. These strategies focus on partnering with organizations dedicated to assisting men exiting prison, breaking the cycle of reoffending through skill-building programs in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity. Meanwhile, Martin engaged in Executive discussions, exploring Habitat’s future with fellow leaders nationwide.

Their agenda also included sessions on leveraging rural loans, engaging veteran volunteers, navigating HUD and Section 8 vouchers for homeownership, and strategies for marketing and merchandising our ReStore. A highlight was our conversation with Visions, our ReStore paint supplier, who generously committed to providing paint for our Habitat Homes at no cost. This conference was an overload of knowledge, professional connection, emotion and insight, underscoring Habitat’s impact locally, nationally, and globally. Every dollar we tithe significantly transforms lives in countries lacking access to safe, affordable housing.

In January 2024, our partner families initiated the planning for the Builds and Bingo Event, scheduled for April 13th, 2024. This event aims to inform  the community about the transformative power of volunteerism at Habitat for Humanity and the ReStore. It’s a unique blend of information session and fundraiser, featuring heartfelt testimonials from our volunteers across various projects.

Sara, a dedicated partner family member, has been securing donations from local businesses for bingo prizes. Meanwhile, Taylor has arranged for her aunt to cater the event, promising a delicious taco  experience. This gathering is not just an event; it’s a celebration of community, commitment, and the collective impact we can achieve in Great Falls and the 406.. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this special day.

I sat down with Pennie, our ReStore Cashier, and talked with her about the ReStore, Habitats vision and her dog, Theo!

Can you share a memorable moment or interaction you have had while working at the ReStore?

“My story with the ReStore began a couple of years ago when I moved into the neighborhood right around the corner. My little dog, Theo, and I would go on our morning walk and stop in the store. I was impressed not only with the cool merchandise but more so with the friendliness of the staff. Cathy knew that Theo would only eat small bites so she would always break treats up for him. So when my neighbor told me they needed a cashier, I was excited to apply. So now I get to come to work and see customers, regulars and new people to pass on the friendliness and help as I can. And when they gripe about no military/senior discounts or prices on an item, I remind them that they are helping a family in need of a home!”

How has working at the ReStore deepened your understanding of our mission and vision for great falls?

“Housing is in such high demand as I have found out from recently having to find a place to rent quickly after a sale of the home I was renting in. What is out there is most definitely not affordable and rent is outrageous! I am looking forward to seeing the whole process from selection of a family to completion of their home.”

What advice would you give some who are interested in volunteering at the restore?

“I would say come. It’s for a great cause. We appreciate the help and you will have fun. And you will get free lunch!”

Any other thoughts or info you would like to inform our habitat supporters about:

“Tell all your friends and family about the ReStore. I love to see the look on the faces of ‘first-timers’ who have never seen the inside of our store–the look is WOW.”

Despite facing a few financially slow months and the brunt of good ol’ fashioned sub-zero weather, our ReStore has remained full of lively shoppers and volunteers. In February, students from the newly established Touro Osteopathic Medicine reached out, eager to lend their hands to volunteer at the ReStore in March and April, highlighting the community’s growing interest in supporting our mission. Remember, our ReStore is always on the lookout for volunteers. It’s through your support that we continue to build and influence together, making a real difference in our community.
